The essentials

Why is the 福 character hung upside down?
倒 (upside down) sounds like 到 (arrive), so an upside-down 福 says “fortune has arrived”. Many families hang it upside down on inner doors and the right way up on the front door.
When do you take Lunar New Year decorations down?
Many families leave them up through the Lantern Festival (Saturday, February 20, 2027), the end of the New Year season. Spring couplets are often left until they’re replaced the next year.
