How lunar birthdays work
The Chinese calendar (农历) is lunisolar: months begin on the new moon and last 29 or 30 days, and a leap month (闰月) is inserted about every three years to keep pace with the seasons. A lunar birthday is the lunar month and day you were born, so its Gregorian date shifts each year, typically within about a month.
Many families celebrate elders’ birthdays on the lunar date, and big “round” birthdays (60, 70, 80) are often marked with longevity noodles (长寿面) and peaches (寿桃). Some families count age the traditional way (虚岁), one or two years higher than Western age; this calculator shows Western age.
Common questions
What is a lunar birthday?
Your birthday counted in the Chinese lunar calendar (农历): the lunar month and day you were born. Many Chinese families, especially grandparents, celebrate this date rather than the Gregorian one.
Why does my lunar birthday fall on a different date every year?
Lunar months follow the moon (29 or 30 days), so a lunar year is about 354 days, and a leap month is added roughly every three years. The same lunar date therefore moves around the Gregorian calendar, usually within a span of about a month.
What if I was born on the 30th of a lunar month?
Some lunar months have only 29 days. In those years most families celebrate on the 29th, the last day of the month; this calculator does the same.
What if I was born in a leap month (闰月)?
Leap months are rare, so the common custom is to celebrate in the regular month of the same number each year, and on the leap month itself in the years it occurs. This calculator uses the regular month.
How do I find my lunar birthday?
